Government Grants?

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

I recently went online and researched information about government grants. I found the government website but it doesn’t have an entire list of grants offered from what I am being told by other companies. Some websites say that they will help you with the process and tell you what you qualify for but that you first have to pay them almost 0 in fees for their assistance? I find that hard since government grants are suppose to be free yet companies are saying they will help but for a fee. Can anyone give me a good overview on how to pursue grants, where to look for what I qualify for, and what to expect, etc., etc.? I have a small retail business that has been open for over a year now & I want to expand. I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

"Help the Big Three, but Not Just With More Money "?

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

"I travel all over the country for business and stick up for Detroit and the Big Three, but people I meet are just not supportive. So the companies need to have an ad blitz and educate the American people and Washington — and fast! They need to point out what they have done that is good, and what they will do to stay viable. But tell Washington exactly what it needs to do to help as well — and not just keep asking for more money.
If other auto manufacturers in other countries have an unfair advantage because their governments subsidize their R&D, then state it clearly. If other countries subsidize health care for their auto industries, then state it clearly. If other countries still place huge tariffs on U.S. cars and not those built in their countries, then state it clearly.
If other auto companies from around the world sell their cars here at break-even costs to try to put the Big Three out of business, then maybe now might be the time to point this out. If there really isn’t fair trade, then our government can help with that.
Make it known. Demand it! Those are things Washington can and should help with. "

AND

"Fascinating, isn’t it? The all-knowing and all-powerful members of the U.S. Senate and House took the CEOs of the Detroit Three to task. They all but called them incompetent. They suggested that perhaps they should resign their positions. They demanded that they take pay cuts to per year.
They want the companies to submit their plans to the government for scrutiny and approval. They demanded that the Detroit Three operate like the Japanese competition.
So what has happened just three months later? Both Toyota and Honda are posting huge losses. Both have gone to their governments, asking for loans. Virtually all European governments are making loans to their automobile manufacturers, because they recognize the importance of manufacturing to an economy.
But our government is still willing to make our auto industry grovel and beg for help, and they seem to be indifferent to their success or failure. Arrogance and ignorance reign supreme in Washington, D.C."

AND

"Put car guys on panel
I urge elected officials at all levels to express their constituents’ concerns about the makeup of the White House’s auto task force. Most of the 22 members have long ago turned their backs on U.S. industry, and none of them has any experience or expertise in industrial management.
Make a case ASAP to modify the panel and get some car guys, like Roger Penske, and some people who are dedicated to what’s best for our nation and fully understand the critical, if not vital, importance of the auto industry, and all of America’s industries, to our nation’s economy, strength, security and very sovereignty. What are your thoughts on the above articles from readers?
People don’t get just how other business will be hurt by the fall of the big 3 (or 2 of the 3). Think about it, what materials go into an automobile.

steel, foams, paint, plastic, fiberglass, misc. metals, washers, screws, bolts, wires, computer componets, fabric, leather, nylon, polyester, rubber, oils and other fluids, not to mention the parts like brakes, tires, and other misc that are built by other companies, glass, mirrors, the list goes on. Someone supplies these items for the auto industry. You don’t think they won’t suffer.

Lets not forget where the employess spend their paychecks, the mom and pop stores near the factories, the restraunts, gas stations.

Can’t leave out the other places they spend their paycheck, grocery store, appliances, furniture, etc…
It will be a huge chain reaction and people won’t get it until they get laid off from thier job or their company closes due to lack of sales. Any town that has one of these factories I feel will be hit the hardest.

Does Government Know That Businesses Plan for at Least 5 Years?

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

The problem in getting us to spend is that we hate instability. 2 years is short term planning not long term.

Incentives for a year get very few people excited. Big companies may switch people around to make it look like R&D jobs were created to take advantage of the incentive, but that is not going to help us smaller companies. If we want temp workers then we will hire contractors, so giving me a short term tax break isn’t worth training a person.

If taxes are going up in 2 years then I am going to look at the impact and start structuring TODAY. It may push me towards automation to replace labor + benefit costs. This also increase my risk and if I make the wrong choice could result in closing. Screw incentives just reduce taxes long term. I want to know the tax policy for the next 5 years minimum. My bank loans and equipment depreciation extend much longer than 2 years.
Accelerated Depreciation means that you don’t get the write down in later years. Taking it in a downturn when your tax rates are lower makes little sense. I need the write off more when business is strong again and income is higher.

Why Did Obama Accept Big Financial Campaign Monies?

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? Now, he’s
trying to blame the shake-down on capitalism.
Janet Reno put pressure & threatened these
institutions to make loans to risky people back
when she was in office or they would risk
government intervention. Therefore, liberals
(Chris Dodd and Barney Frank) are the real cause of this debackle. They protected these
businesses saying Republicans were just trying
to scare people.

Why Is Making GM & Chrysler Prove Themselves Viable Before Getting MORE Government Money a Bad Thing?

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Bottom line, this whole bailout/assistance thing WITHOUT regulations (i.e. giving them a blank Government check to spend freely) started out with Sachs Goldman and A.I.G. back in the Fall of 2008.

We also ‘loaned’ GM & Chrysler money under the premise that they came up with a viable business plan before they received any additional money. They had lots of time to come up with this plan/proposal.

But, here in the 11th hour, they’ve proven that they have NOT taken the proper steps to show that they deserve additional Government funds. I guess they (GM & Chrysler) felt that Washington was bluffing and didn’t take this as seriously as they should’ve.

I personally think this was a great move by not giving them any extra money ‘just because’, like we have in the past.

So, why is making GM & Chrysler prove themselves viable before getting MORE Government money a bad thing?

Why Doesn’t the Government Crack Down on Racketeering? ?

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

I had a job interview scheduled with Bankers Life and Casualty Company. I decided to do some research on them and found out…..

1. How uncomfortable their former employees were with taking advantage of their customers by talking them into contracts they could not honor just for the sake of commission.

2.I saw on TV as well, two former bank employees that were coached into talking their clients into financial loans they knew that were high risk! Not to mention the housing & Car loans to people who do not have the income to support their contract.

3. Colleges accepting high risk students and helping them get loans to fill their enrollment quota. More than half of these student drop out and are tied down with loans they cannot pay and do not have the education to get a job to honor their tuition!

It’s this type of racketeering that is killing America It’s creating unemployment because people are in need of high paying jobs to satisfy their Financial comments!

Why aren’t these harmful ethics outlawed! This is not Business this is Loansharking! If they correct this type of corrupted business practice we can get back to basics in America!

We’ll stop seeing things like people Driving BMW’s,Lexus’s & Escalates who make 12,000 a year living in studio apartments with 6 children andd people living in Mansions who don’t even have careers.

Americans have been sold the lie we don’t have to work for luxuries anymore.

Who Provides Grant Money to Start a Small Business??

Friday, October 1st, 2010

I have a friend who lost her job with a Dell call center in Oregon & she is trying to find government or private people that provide funding to start a small business. She tried the Small Business Association, but they require adequate equity investment, evidence of ability to repay the loan from earrnings & reasonable amount of collateral. Also, they do NOT provide grants.
She has researched the business she wants to start, but she cannot meet the requirements of the SBA & she would prefer grant money. Like she told them, over half of ALL new businesses fail within the 1st 5 years due to lack of operating capital & they want me to pay THEM back instead of being able to put the money back into the business to see that it succeeds. ANY IDEAS from you folks????
Do you know of anyone who has gotten a business grant & from whom it came????
THANK YOU!!!!

Advice on Student Loans…?

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Okay, so I am majoring in something that is a pretty crappy degree (think business & behavioral sciences). I am done with all of my classes, except for one. You have to have a 2.0 in order to graduate, but due to many reasons (death of family member, diagnosed with bipolar, etc), I have not been able to maintain that. Basically, I have to take 25 hours (roughly 8 classes) and make all A’s. This is going to be nearly impossible to do. I can probably make A’s and B’s, but this school is hard and competitive. Anyways, I have a ton of money in loans, and it is going to be hard to find a job in my major making good money in order to pay them back. What should I do? How can the damn government allow this to happen? CitiAssit charges students 8% interest! Ugh..Any advice? Sorry to bore you!
